"Happy New Year to Everyone!

In a few hours we'll bid goodbye to 2011 and hopefully forget its tragedies, particularly the Sendong Experience.

It's time to reflect the goodness of the Lord and to thank His countless blessings.

For the victims, it may take years to recover from the trauma it has brought forth unequaled damage: physically, economically, emotionally etc, yet, I strongly believe that an overwhelming goodness will flow into Iligan, as He always promised.

It was a "storm" sent forth to wash out, cleanse and purge the corruption and greed and the evil that's rooted among us - from our leaders down to its constituents.

It was a wake-up call for us to take care of our environment, a detoxifying agent, a bittersweet pill for the moral and economic recovery/transformation of Iligan and its people; paving way for beautiful things to happen.

I can feel it blossoming in the overwhelming kindness, tinabangay (cooperation) and goodness of our citizens in our country and around the world as shown during the tragedy.

And hopefully, it will awaken our city officials of their main duty to serve the people, especially at these critical times, and, the sprouting abundantly of our talented intellectuals ready to help and lead Iligan in any way they can.

With high hopes, we cheer for a New year, a new life and a new Iligan!!!

(Arise Iligan!)

"The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had the means, time, influence and educational advantages, but what he will do with the things he has." ~Hamilton Wright Mabie

Nathaniel Hawthorne Quotes

"Faith is a grand cathedral, with divinely pictured windows - standing without, you can see no glory, nor can imagine any, but standing within every ray of light reveals a harmony of unspeakable splendors. " ~Nathaniel Hawthorne (Inspirational Quotes)

"From principles is derived probability, but truth or certainty is obtained only from facts.” ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Generosity is the flower of justice." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as sunshine autumn by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air." ~ Nataniel Hawthorne

"I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

"It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at bottom. Each, in its utmost development, supposes a high degree of intimacy and heart-knowledge; each renders one individual dependent for the food of his affections and spiritual life upon another; each leaves the passionate lover, or the no less passionate hater, forlorn and desolate by the withdrawal of his object". ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Just as there comes a warm sunbeam into every cottage window, so comes a love-beam of God's care for every separate need." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Love, whether newly born or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, that it overflows upon the outward world." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne (from Butterflies and Pebbles)
[Hawthorne explores the transformative power of love in this quote. Love, in all its forms, has the ability to illuminate the darkness within and around individuals, infusing their lives with warmth, joy, and purpose. Whether it is the excitement of new love or the reawakening of love long dormant, its radiance extends beyond the confines of the heart, influencing one's interactions with the world. This quote celebrates the transformative and uplifting nature of love, portraying it as a force capable of bringing light to even the darkest of circumstances. From Eng.  Lit.]

"No man for any considerable period can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true." -from Nathaniel Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER, first published on this day in 1850 from Everyman's Library
[Hawthorne delves into the idea of authenticity and the consequences of living a double life. This quote highlights the internal conflict that arises when individuals present different personas to different audiences. Over time, the boundary between the true self and the façade blurs, causing confusion and a loss of identity. It speaks to the moral and psychological toll of living inauthentically and the importance of embracing one's true self. From Eng.  Lit.]

"Selfishness is one of the qualities apt to inspire love." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom". ~Nathaniel Hawthorne
[This quote encapsulates the transformative journey of Hester Prynne, the protagonist of "The Scarlet Letter." After enduring public shame and ostracism for her adultery, Hester experiences a sense of liberation when she embraces her identity and rejects societal expectations. The weight of societal judgment and guilt is lifted, allowing her to discover a newfound sense of freedom and self-acceptance. It illustrates the paradoxical nature of freedom—sometimes it is only truly appreciated in contrast to the constraints that precede it. From Eng. Lit.]

"The world owes all its onward impulses to men ill at ease. The happy man inevitably confines himself within ancient limits." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

"There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

"We dream in our waking moments, and walk in our sleep". ~Nathaniel Hawthorne
[This quote suggests a profound truth about human existence. It implies that even when we are awake and going about our daily lives, we are often unaware or unconscious of our true desires, motivations, and inner selves. Our actions may be guided by subconscious impulses or societal expectations, leading us to metaphorically "walk in our sleep." This introspective observation invites readers to contemplate the duality of consciousness and the complexities of human nature. from Eng. Lit.]

Thought for Today - Creating Thoughts Of Benefit

"Acts of virtue emerge from deep within, from an inner sanctuary of silence from which inspiration flows. "Courage comes the moment you decide to walk through the unavoidable storms in your life rather than sidestepping them. Caroline Kent
Courage is admitting that you're afraid and facing that fear directly. It's being strong enough to ask for help and humble enough to accept it.

Courage is being responsible for your own actions and admitting your own mistakes without placing blame on others. It's relying not on others for your success, but on your own skills and efforts.

Courage is daring to take a first step, a big leap, or a different path. It's attempting to do something that no one has done before and all others thought impossible.

Courage is keeping heart in the face of disappointment and looking at defeat not as an end but as a new beginning. It's believing that things will ultimately get better even as they get worse.

Courage is refusing to quit even when you're intimidated by impossibility. It's choosing a goal, sticking with it, and finding solutions to the problems.

Courage is standing up for what you believe in without worrying about the opinions of others. It's following your own heart, living your own life, and settling for nothing less than the best for yourself.

Courage is thinking big, aiming high, and shooting far. It's taking a dream and doing anything, risking everything, and stopping at nothing to it make it a reality." ~Caroline Kent~

Thought for Today - Working on Rebuilding Relationships

"It’s easy to speak negatively when we do not like something about someone. We often react without thinking and become angry. Our words and behaviour become negative or insulting. This further widens the gap damaging the relationship. When someone does something undesirable. I first need to understand the behaviour. Every person has a reason to behave the way he or she does even if I cannot understand it at the time. The more I react to the other person and the bad behaviour, the greater the distance between us. To mend the relationship I need to remind myself of the other person’s good qualities." ~Thought for Today-UK

Thought for Today - Trustee Consciousness

"We all have a relationship with everything. Obviously the relationship we have with the people and objects in our immediate vicinity is more intimate than the rest of the world. For most of us the most common relationship is possession. In our minds we think we own and possess things like cars and houses and carpets and golf clubs etc. This thinking easily spreads into jobs and tasks and positions and perhaps even other people. "I want you", and "You are mine alone", is the essence of many romantic film scripts and song lyrics. What we forget is that this relationship is wrong. It is not possible to possess anything. Care for..yes. Use...yes. But possess...no. You can't take it with you when you go, so we say! And yet it's the idea of possession which lies at the heart of all fear, war and conflict. Can you see it? Fear of loss, fear of not acquiring what we have already decided is ours in our minds. So what is a better relationship we can choose which takes all the fear away. Be a trustee. Everything comes to us in trust, for us to use and then to set it free. The consciousness of trustee sets us free of the tension of grasping and guarding. To see ourselves as trustees of everything that we receive, including our bodies, encourages our innate capacity to 'care for with dignity'. It is a much more relaxing way of relating to the things which we are privileged to receive in life." ~Thought for Today-UK
