Thought for Today - Mindful Moments

"Most of us are of sound mind, but many of us have trouble maintaining a note of harmony and peace. Most of us know how to think, but few of us are able to control our thoughts. We all have the capacity to be creative, to image new ideas, but few of us are able to do it together and co-create in harmony with each other. We could all do with some mental training so that we may use the most powerful energy in the universe, the mind, which is always at our instant disposal. We can begin with mindfulness. It's a simple way to gently help our mind go where it is best to go, do what is the best thing to do. It begins by simply being fully aware of what you are doing. Mostly we are not fully aware, as our minds wander into the past and then into possible futures. We spend most of our time watching others and so rarely fully focus on what we are actually doing ourselves. Next time you sit down to a meal, watch your self. Be aware of only what you are eating. Every time your mind wants to wander, bring it gently and lovingly back to the action and sensation of eating. Then do the same when cleaning, when writing, when working. The more you do it stronger and more focused and more rational will be your concentration, the more natural will be your actions, the more peaceful you will feel, and the more relaxed you will be, no matter what you are doing." ~Thought for Today-UK

BODHIDHARMA Quotes

"If you don't find a teacher soon, you'll live this life in vain." ~Bodhidharma

". . . the fools of this world prefer to look for sages far away. They don't believe that the wisdom of their own mind is the sage . . . the sutras say, "Mind is the teaching." But people of no understanding don't believe in their own mind or that by understanding this teaching they can become a sage. They prefer to look for distant knowledge and long for things in space, buddha-images, light, incense, and colors. They fall prey to falsehood and lose their minds to insanity." ~Bodhidharma

"The mind is the root from which all things grow. If you can understand the mind, everything else is included. It's like the root of a tree. All a tree's fruit and flowers, branches and leaves depend on its root. If you nourish its root, a tree multiplies. If you cut its root, it dies. … Those who understand the mind reach enlightenment with minimum effort." ~Bodhidharma

[ONLY human beings can have ideals. Our difficult struggles amid the severe realities of life alone cannot inspire hope. To build a house, to make a good marriage – these, too, are ideals. In life, we must have ideals. And among these, the ideal of kosen-rufu(the spread of Peace and Happiness) is the loftiest.

THE prime point of my life is that I am the disciple of [late] President Toda. This is my point of departure and the point that I return to do everything I undertake. Precisely because I have this immovable prime point, there is nothing that I am afraid of, and nothing can perturb me. I am free of confusion, and am in no danger of succumbing to arrogance. I hope that each of you will firmly establish your spiritual prime point. For therein lies the key to your proudly scaling the high mountains of human life.

EVERYONE dies eventually. Almost none of us here or of the several billion other people on the planet at this moment will still be alive a hundred years from now. This is a stern reality that nothing can change. When we deeply recognize this truth, it becomes impossible for us to squander our lives.

RESPECTING others is an indication of one’s depth as a person, the strength and profundity of one’s character. If you are demanding of yourself, you can be kind to others. The person who works hardest is the most accepting of others. In contrast, those who are slipshod and undisciplined themselves are usually hard on others. Those who have never worked hard themselves tend to demand that others do so."

Victory in life is decided by that last concentrated burst of energy filled with the resolve to win." ~Daisaku Ikeda

"Dear Lord! Kind Lord!
Gracious Lord! I pray

and with all the needy
O divine, I pray,
this vast treasure of content
that is mine today!

"A love of learning has a lot to do with learning that we are loved." ~Fred Rogers

"All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are....Ten seconds of silence." ~Fred Rogers

"At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service." ~Fred Rogers

"Confronting our feelings and giving them appropriate expression always takes strength, not weakness. It takes strength to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring and to channel them into nonviolent outlets. It takes strength to face our sadness and to grieve and to let our grief and our anger flow in tears when they need to. It takes strength to talk about our feelings and to reach out for help and comfort when we need it." ~Fred Rogers

"Imagine what our real neighborhoods would be like if each of us offered . . . just one kind word to another person." ~Fred Rogers

"Life is for service.” ~Fred Rogers

"Listening is a very active awareness of the coming together of at least two lives. Listening, as far as I'm concerned, is certainly a prerequisite of love. One of the most essential ways of saying 'I love you' is being a receptive listener." ~Fred Rogers

"Love begins with listening." ~Fred Rogers

“Music is the one art we all have inside. We may not be able to play an instrument, but we can sing along or clap or tap our feet. Have you ever seen a baby bouncing up and down in the crib in time to some music? When you think of it, some of that baby's first messages from his or her parents may have been lullabies, or at least the music of their speaking voices. All of us have had the experience of hearing a tune from childhood and having that melody evoke a memory or a feeling. The music we hear early on tends to stay with us all our lives.” ~Fred Rogers, The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember

E. L. Doctorow Quotes

“History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth.” ~E. L. Doctorow

“In the twentieth century one of the most personal relationships to have developed is that of the person and the state. It's become a fact of life that governments have become very intimate with people, most always to their detriment.” ~E. L. Doctorow

“Planning to write is not writing. Outlining, researching, talking to people about what you're doing, none of that is writing. Writing is writing.” ~E. L. Doctorow

“You can't remember sex. You can remember the fact of it, and recall the setting, and even the details, but the sex of the sex cannot be remembered, the substantive truth of it, it is by nature self-erasing, you can remember its anatomy and be left with a judgment as to the degree of your liking of it, but whatever it is as a splurge of being, as a loss, as a charge of the conviction of love stopping your heart like your execution, there is no memory of it in the brain, only the deduction that it happened and that time passed, leaving you with a silhouette that you want to fill in again.” ~E. L. Doctorow

“You could go for miles without seeing an end to the procession of troops and horses and wagons, ... An eagle aloft in the April winds high over the landscape would only see something iridescently blue and side-winding that looked like the floodplain of a river.” ~E. L. Doctorow

Thought for Today on Heart

"An honest heart is an open heart. If we are dishonest in any way with ourselves or with others, it means we are in hiding. There is a wall, a barrier behind which we conceal something of ourselves. Subtle tension will be our companion, and while most of us learn to live with it, it drains our energy and tightens our muscles. On the other hand don't be too honest with others - feel their pulse - sometimes others are not ready to hear what's in your heart. But know that when you are honest you will experience a level of inner relaxation that you had forgotten was even possible." ~Thought for Today-UK

"Have a heart so pure it can sweeten a sour mood and elevate a falling star." ~Thought for Today-UK

"I express my care and concern by responding to situations with a cool head and to people with a warm heart. If I remain aware that as fellow human beings we are all part of one family, and that even the smallest of gestures can make a difference in people's lives, I am always blessed with a caring heart. It takes so little to show that I care yet it can mean so much." ~Thought for Today-UK

Yellow Rose from dear old Nancy's garden
2 April 2012

"The heart is like a flower - unless it is open it cannot release its fragrance into the world. The fragrance of the heart is made up of the qualities and virtues of our spirit. Most of us have learned how to keep our heart closed in a world that would trample all over us if we let it. Being open hearted today seems to require tremendous courage. It is a courage which comes only when we realise that no one can hurt us, no matter what they say or do. They may hurt our body, but if we have realised we are spirit, nothing outside can touch us, if we so decide. Little by little, practice opening your heart to those you think have hurt you. Realise it wasn't them that hurt you, it was yourself. And it taught you not to trust and you closed your heart. A closed heart is in need of opening. And when you do, you will have begun to heal yourself." ~Thought for Today-UK

"To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart." ~Thought for Today-UK

Let them leave your life quietly. Letting go is oftentimes easier than holding on. We think it’s too hard to let go, until we actually do. Then we ask ourselves, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” ~

Thought for Today - Sparks of Purity

"Words! They are all around me! I see them. I use them. Harsh words, soothing words, biting words; words that give pain and sorrow; words that give joy and pleasure. They are vital to communication. When words are spoken there are reactions, negative or positive. Either thoughts are triggered or emotions fired or actions performed. Words colour our behaviour. And how lovely it is to hear words that are calm and free from rancour and aggression. To hear words that lift the soul and leave it with renewed vigour. Such words are the sparks of purity. It is important to remember that my speech indicates what is in my mind. As the thinking, so the words uttered. Mental calmness makes my words calm. A pure mind makes for pure words. It is said that speech may exalt someone to kingship or send him to the gallows. I should never let myself indulge in false, bitter and vicious speech. My words should reflect my true, inner nature, that of purity and peace. Words, once spoken, can never be recalled. They reverberate all around, beyond our control. Today, as I utter words, what effect will they have on those who hear them? Will they be the words that are poisonous and cause pain? Or will my tongue be like that of the nightingale, sweet and so, so very soothing and lovely to the ear?" ~Thought for Today-UK

John Donne Quotes

"God himself took a day to rest in, and a good man's grave is his Sabbath." ~John Donne

"No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." ~John Donne

Pablo Casals Quotes

”Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.” ~Pablo Casals

"I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its greatest significance." ~Pablo Casals

"It takes courage for people to listen to their own goodness and act on it." ~Pablo Casals

"The love of one's country is a natural thing. But why should love stop at the border" ~Pablo Casals

Thought for Today - Do It Now

"Why do we delay doing what we know we need to do? Is it because we feel we 'have to' to do it? Is it because we cannot clearly see the benefits? Is it because we will need to move some twigs in the nest of our comfort zone? Is it because we fool ourselves into waiting till we feel like doing it? Is it because someone else might be more advantaged than us? Is it because we are just plain lazy? It's probably a bit of all of those. But one thing is for sure - you've already done it in your mind! And as long as there is a gap between your thoughts and your actions then there will be an inner tension which is draining your power - whether you are aware of it or not. Do it, delegate it or dump it!" ~Thought for Today-UK
