Thought for Today - Comparison with Others

"Comparing yourself with others will leave you vulnerable on three counts: you'll either feel inferior, superior or impressed. All three of these states are dangerous because they all disregard the underlying principle of our true connection with each other - mutual love and regard, based on independently generated self-esteem. To protect yourself from this vulnerability, make sure that your attention remains turned within, towards the spiritual experience of pure pride. Staying centred in your elevated self-respect will help you remain undisturbed by others around you. Keep asking yourself, "Who am I?" "How would my spiritual personality respond to this event or person?" this will help to centre you further, and allow you to enjoy the successful efforts of others." ~Thought for Today-UK

Baba Ram Dass Quotes

"A soul takes human birth in order to have a series of experiences through which it will awaken out of its illusion of separateness. The physical experience of being incarnated is the curriculum, and the purpose of the course is to awaken us from the illusion that we are the incarnation. Spiritual practices are tools to help us accomplish these goals..." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"Acknowledge the feelings and allow them and see them as part of the human condition. They are like subtle thought forms. Emotions are really subtle thought forms. And they all arise in response to something. They are reactions that come. ...you can feel how reactive your emotions are to situations. ... So you cultivate a quietness in yourself that just watches these things coming and going and arising and passing away. And you learn not to act out your emotions, but just to appreciate and allow them. That’s part of the way in which you use them spiritually." ~Ram Dass

"Anything you do with attachment creates more desire, keeping you in the game and illusion longer. Once you see through that it all falls away." ~Ram Dass

"As you dissolve into love, your ego fades. You’re not thinking about loving; you’re just being love, radiating like the sun." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"Everything in your life, there is a vehicle for your transformation. Use it." ~Ram Dass

"Fear is the result of getting caught in the middle. Buddha says that it is the result of ignorance. And the ignorance is that when you start out as an infant with an undifferentiated awareness, and then you are taught who you are, that component, that structure which we call ego, is a very fragile structure. It seems tough, but it is actually a fragile structure. It is a structure that is created of mind, of learned neural patterns." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"How do we transform suffering into grace? How do we cultivate a process that allows grace to fill our lives? How do we turn anger into compassion – chaos into equanimity – separation into unity and oneness?" ~Ram Dass

"I am without form, without limit, beyond space, beyond time. I am in everything. Everything is me. I am the bliss of the universe." ~Ram Dass

"I would like my life to be a statement of love and compassion--and where it isn't, that's where my work lies.” ~Ram Dass

"If we are to help heal the world, we need to remember that it is a sacred place. Our actions need to be positive statements, reminders that even in the worst times there is a world worth struggling for. We need to find ways to keep the vision alive, to acknowledge but not get caught in the dark side, to remember that even the worst aspects of suffering are only part of the whole picture." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"In the course of your journey it is likely that your day-to-day companions or friends may change. Of course, some of your existing relationships will move easily into this new domain and the relationship will become deeper and calmer… coming to exist in the eternal present." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"Love is the emotional color of the soul. Unconditional love is the color of enlightenment, unfettered by personal barriers or distinctions, devoid of ego, yet reflecting the highest Self. It’s like sunlight unfiltered by clouds or the taste of water from the purest spring..." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

Because when you love someone you don’t want to lay your suffering on them and your fears. Also you are afraid if you open your heart too far their suffering will overwhelm you." ~Ram Dass

"One way to get free of attachment is to cultivate the witness consciousness, to become a neutral observer of your own life. The witness place inside you is simple awareness, the part of you that is aware of everything — just noticing, watching, not judging, just being present, being here now..." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"Only that in you which is me can hear what I'm saying." ~Baba Ram Dass

"Real love is the one celebrating itself as the two." ~Ram Dass

"Saints are one in their work as divine channels. They link us up with the source from which all bliss flows: love. They bake the unbaked pots and make them fit to receive the divine bliss. They illuminate the path by removing all the darkness that holds us back. Their work does not end with the energizing or enlightening of some select few here and there. They also serve as the unflickering flame helping to light other candles." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"The universe is an example of love. Like a tree. Like the ocean. Like my body. Like my wheelchair. I see the love." ~Ram Dass

"The way in which we deal with suffering has much to do with the way in which we are able to be of service to others. Of course, not all helping revolves around suffering. Much of what we offer may be in the nature of simple support or guidance: moving a friend’s new furniture, teaching a child to read. But it is the affliction of others that most directly awakens in us the desire to be of care and comfort..." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"The witness is your awareness of your own thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Witnessing is like waking up in the morning and then looking in the mirror and noticing yourself — not judging or criticizing, just neutrally observing the quality of being awake." ~Ram Dass, Love Serve Remember

"Either you own your situation or it will own you. Either you take responsibility for your life, or someone else will. Blame is a scapegoat – it’s an easy way out of taking accountability for your own outcome. It’s a lot easier to point the finger at someone or something else instead of looking within. Blame is not constructive; it does not help you or anyone else – nobody wins in the blame game. The amount of energy and stress it takes to place blame elsewhere takes away from your ability to move forward and find a real solution.

And remember, the road you are traveling may be the more challenging one, but don’t lose faith. Don’t listen to the doubters, don’t let setbacks keep you down, and most of all, don’t give up on yourself." ~Positive Thoughts

How to Realize Unconditional Peace

"The mind is always scheming. Looking for ways to make you happy; ways to make you feel good.

How you can avoid feeling the things you don't want to feel and how you can feel more
what you would like to feel.

There is nothing wrong with this, it is the nature of the mind.

But it is also how stress is created.

Because there is what is here in this moment and there is how you would like 'here' to be.

If you really look this manipulation is happening most of the time.

Even when you sit to meditate the mind is scheming.

The last thing the mind wants to do is to let go of its control and experience this moment.

But what happens if you let go of all the scheming and simply feel what is here.

Not just in meditation but in daily life.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are confronted with something you do not wish to feel.

Whether there is a feeling of loneliness, jealousy, fear, awkwardness, whatever feeling is there instead of letting the survival instinct kick in and control it, mask it, distract yourself from it, what if you simply allowed yourself to feel that feeling.

If you allowed yourself to be completely vulnerable to that feeling.

I am not talking about analyzing it or dramatizing it but simply to feel the sensation of that feeling.

To just allow it.

If you allow yourself to feel what you have been avoiding feeling suddenly you are immersed in this moment in a way you might never have been before.

You are so immersed in this moment, so open to what is here, that there is nothing to hold on to, nothing to know.

And although it may leave you feeling completely vulnerable to what is here, it also leaves you completely in peace.

If you are completely surrendered to your experience of this moment then you are at one with this moment.

You begin to recognize the underlying experience of deep fathomless peace that is here all the time.

And in this peace you can learn through practice to remain in it; to remain aligned with it.

All of the things that you used to avoid now become opportunities to move deeper into peace.

It is the practice of moving beyond the mind, beyond knowing into your natural state."

"If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to. "Listen to the song inside you that wonderful resonance inside you that longs to be heard. And when you listen to its sweet call, you are present, you are loved, you are infinite, you are divine. Allow this magnificent feeling to wash over you to move through you as if you were on a beautiful sandy beach of your Dreams smelling the salt sea air, feeling the gentle trade winds move through your hair, feeling the soft sand at your feet, feeling grounded." ~Positive Thoughts

"Love someone who is honest. Honest with you, with others, and with themselves. You cannot love someone you do not trust. Find someone who willingly shares responsibility. You will be a team in every single sense. Find someone you cherish togetherness with. And someone who understands the importance of alone time. Someone who values your opinion. Someone with a willingness to learn. A person with an open mind. Find someone who makes it easy to feel grateful. For everything. Wit is important. Life is too short not to love someone who loves to laugh. Make sure they are somebody who lets you cry, too. Despair will come. Find someone that you want to be there with you through those times. Do not settle for second best. This sort of love is out there.
Believe it!" ~Positive Thoughts

"Love your man. Study him. Understand where he is in his emotional development and be a good role model for him. Men need the essence of the sacred feminine in their lives to evolve, whether they know it or not. But make sure you honor yourself in the process. Respecting yourself helps others respect you. It also teaches others to respect themselves." ~Positive Thoughts

From Along the Path to Enlightenment

1. To become more conscious is the greatest gift anyone can give to the world; moreover, in a ripple effect, the gift comes back to its source.

2. Spiritual development is not an accomplishment but a way of life. It is an orientation that brings its own rewards, and what is important is the direction of one’s motives.

3. What can you actually do to be helpful to the world? Make a gift of your life and lift all mankind by being kind, considerate, forgiving, and compassionate at all times, in all places, and under all conditions, with everyone as well as yourself. That is the greatest gift anyone can give.

4. Out of all-inclusive, unconditional compassion comes the healing of all mankind.

5. In a universe where “like goes to like” and “birds of a feather fly together,” we attract to us that which we emanate.

6. Every act or decision we make that supports life supports all life, including our own. The ripples we create return to us.

7. One basic principle has the power to resolve the problems of the social marketplace: Support the solution instead of attacking the supposed causes.

8. In truth, we exist and survive, not because of the ego, but in spite of it.

9. To best serve the world, seek enlightenment and transcend illusions rather than contribute to them.

10. To transcend the world requires compassion and acceptance, the result of inner humility, by which the world is surrendered to God with increased peace of mind.

11. What the ego cannot lift with all its might is like a feather to the grace of God.

12. To win in life means to give up the obsession of “who’s at fault.” Graciousness is far more powerful than belligerence. It is better to succeed than to win.

13. By its nature, the pathway to God is not easy. It requires considerable courage, fortitude, willingness, and forbearance. It is strengthened by humility and a benign conscience.

14. An extremely valuable insight that is learned by all spiritually evolved persons in the course of their development is seeing one’s own personal consciousness as the decisive influence that determines all that occurs in one’s life.

15. Holding a goal in mind is inspirational and actually helpful to its accomplishment, because what is held in mind tends to actualize. However, it is a mistake to attack oneself with guilt for failing to achieve the ideal. Upon examination, it will be frequently discovered that it was not really the goal that was desired, but the satisfaction that was associated with it.

16. It’s pleasing to discover that it isn’t necessary to drive oneself forward; instead, one can simply allow oneself to move forward as blocks are removed. Thus, one becomes attracted by the future rather than propelled by the past.

Quotes from Authors as Gleaned from Positive Thoughts:

"When we focus on abundance, our life feels abundant; when we focus on lack, our life feels lacking. It is purely a matter of focus." ~Susan Jeffers
Difficulties arise in the lives of us all. What is the most important is dealing with the hard times, coping with the changes, and getting through the other side where the sun is still shining, just for you.

It takes a strong person to deal with tough times and difficult choices. But you are a strong person.

It takes courage. But you possess the inner courage to see you through.

It takes being an active participant in your life. But you are in the driver's seat, and you can determine the direction you want tomorrow to go in.

Hang in there and take care to see that you don't lose sight of the one thing that is constant, beautiful, and true: everything will be fine- and it will turn out that way because of the special kind of person you are.

So beginning today and lasting a lifetime through- hang in there, and don't be afraid to feel like the morning sun is shinning just for you.

-Douglas Pagels

"It is not a difficult thing to change the pattern of your vibration, especially when you understand that you can do it a little bit at a time. Once you have an understanding of how vibrations work, how they affect your experience, and, most important, what your emotions are telling you about your vibrations, now you can make steady, fast progress toward the achievement of anything that you desire." ~The Vortex

"Keep in mind at all times that you are very capable of dealing with any complications that life has to offer. So do whatever you must feel whatever you must and keep in mind at all times that we all grow wise and become more sensitive and are able to enjoy life more after we go through hard times." ~Susan Polis Schutz

"Realize that what you feel you lack in one regard may be more than compensated for in another. What you feel you lack in the present may become one of your strengths in the future. See your future filled with promise and possibility.
Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience." ~Sandra Hauss

"Start thinking of yourself as a magnificent, powerful, and courageous being. Then sit back and enjoy the gifts the universe showers on you. These new, fresh experiences will reflect your healthy, empowered vision of yourself." ~Lucinda Bassett

"Everything we think and feel is creating our future. If you're worried or in fear, then you're bringing more of that into your life throughout the day." ~Marci Shimoff

"What does it mean to live in truth? It means to live honestly at all levels. It’s not just about what you say; it’s about thoughts, actions, and the way you live. This involves authenticity—to live in alignment with who you know your true self to be. What you’ll receive is very empowering. You become free to live and explore the truth of who you really are as you move toward the future. You’re at liberty to change, develop, and go further in you own life within your own true spirit and mind." ~Denise Marek

"When you stop chasing the wrong things you give the right things a chance to catch you." ~Positive Thoughts

"What will I give to the world today? What will I add to the experiences of the people with whom I have contact on this day? I can't say for sure just whom I'll deal with today, but I can decide right now whether I want my contribution to this day to be positive or negative, helpful or hurtful, constructive or destructive, uplifting or not.

Today, I want to contribute pleasantness whenever I meet someone, whether I know them or not. I don't have to wear a pasted-on smile in order to be pleasant, but I do have to avoid sarcasm or judgment. When people receive my pleasantness, it may be the first pleasantness of their day, so I'll try to be very pleasant.

I'd also like to contribute kindness to this new day. This means that I must use words that are kind and act in a kindly way, avoiding looks and actions and words that simply are not kind. Perhaps someone will appreciate this kindness and pass it on to someone else.

I'd also like to contribute encouragement. I'll have plenty of opportunities to do so. And if I am encouraging, it may just happen that someone else finds the strength and courage to continue something very important to them.

I'll try my best to contribute praise and avoid criticism. If the praise is sincere, I may just be able to make someone else feel better about him or herself.

I want to contribute peacefulness. If I can face all of my duties and problems with a quiet confidence, looking calmly for solutions rather than complaining about the way things are, I can act as a role model for peacefulness. In this way at least I won't be adding to the stressful input of those people who are around me.

It would be nice if I could also contribute some hope to this day, for someone, somewhere. It could be in the form of letting them know that I've been through what they have, and things worked out okay, or in the form of helping them to see the strengths they have that will help them to do what they need to do. Either way, the hope they get can be very valuable for them.

"There always is light for us to access." ~Positive Thoughts

"You see behind the masks and beneath the fears to the beauty within every heart." ~Positive Thoughts

Words of Wisdom
It‘s not where we stand but in what direction we are moving.

Sometimes we find ourselves running in place, struggling to get ahead simply because we forget to address some of the simple truths that govern our potential to
make progress. So here’s a quick reminder:

The acquisition of knowledge doesn’t mean you’re growing. Growing happens when what you know changes how you live.

You can’t have good ideas unless you’re willing to generate a lot of bad ones.

Change is often resisted when it is needed the most.

Discipline is choosing what you want most over what you want right now.

People seldom do things to the best of their ability. They do things to the best of their willingness.

You can’t change other people; you can only offer guidance, and lead by example.

Right now, there’s a lot you don’t know. And if you never challenge your own beliefs, the list will never shrink.

If you’re talking to someone you don’t know well, you may be talking to someone who knows way more about the topic of conversation than you do.

The most common and harmful addiction in the world is the draw of comfort.

Growth begins at the end of your comfort zone.Stepping outside of your comfort zone will put things into perspective from an angle you can’t grasp now.

When you spend time worrying, you’re simply using your imagination to create things you don’t want. It’s usually only as good or bad as you think it is.

Most of what we see is only what we think about what we see.

Most of the bad things you worry about will never happen.

Most of the bad things that do happen will have never crossed your worried mind. Some circumstances are uncontrollable, but we can always decide how we react to those circumstances.

Those who complain the most, accomplish the least.

Whenever somebody discredits you, and tells you that you can’t do something, keep in mind that they are speaking from within the boundaries of their own limitations.

Every problem you have in your life right now is your responsibility, regardless of who initially caused it.

It’s not so much about finding opportunities as it is about creating them.

"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend." ~Bruce Lee

Be water, my friend." ~Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey (2000); here, Lee was reciting lines he wrote for his short lived role on the TV series Longstreet.

"It seems probable that if we were never bewildered there would never be a story to tell about us; we should partake of the superior nature of the all-knowing immortals whose annals are dreadfully dull so long as flurried humans are not, for the positive relief of bored Olympians, mixed up with them." ~Henry James, from the preface to The Princess Casamassima from Everyman's Library

"The infirmity of art was the candour of affection, the grossness of pedigree the refinement of sympathy; the ugliest objects, in fact, as a general thing, were the bravest, the tenderest mementos, and, as such, figured in glass cases apart, worthy doubtless of the home, but not worthy of the temple — dedicated to the grimacing, not to the clear-faced, gods." ~Henry James, The Golden Bowl from Everyman's Library

"The power to guess the unseen from the seen, to trace the implications of things, to judge the whole piece by the pattern, the condition of feeling life in general so completely that you are well on your way to knowing any particular corner of it—this cluster of gifts may almost be said to constitute experience." ~Henry James (1843-1916)

"Wherever I am is wherever I am meant to be, whatever I am doing is whatever I am meant to be doing and whatever everyone else is doing is exactly what they are meant to be doing - this is contentment. If you do want to change where you are, or what you are doing, the first thing is to be content with wherever you are and whatever you are doing right now! Paradoxically that's what attracts opportunities and invitations to be somewhere else! Why? Because you are a living magnet, and contentment is one of your most attractive qualities. And the law of attraction says that according to your dominant thoughts so you will attract the people and circumstances into your life. Being content right now attracts the best possible future." ~Thought for Today-UK

"Avoid Gift Obligation. If you don't have money and you're buying a gift for somebody, chances are they don't have money either. If you give them a gift they're going to feel obligated to give you a gift back. Now you're both going to have to put those gifts on your credit cards and you're both going to be spending money that neither of you can afford. So you have to remember a gift -- a true gift -- is not only a gift for the person that you're giving it to, but it's a gift to yourself as well. Gifts you can't afford will never be a true gift to yourself." ~Suze Orman

Even if the motions feel hollow, the actions are powerful, and powerful actions will nourish your courage." ~Suze Orman
